A visit to David Hockney’s show at The Royal Academy provoked my interest in iPad work. I was intrigued with the images he had produced on an iPad. A few days later in France I was offered an old Apple iPad. I accepted the gift so long as brushes application could be installed. This happened. My first drawing was of the Church I could see from where we were staying, St.Marcel du Perigord. I just used my finger to draw. I quickly became hooked. Since then I have upgraded to an Apple Air which is much lighter to take with me on drawing expeditions. There is something about the immediacy of the medium which I enjoy. I also generally use a simple stylus alongside fingers now.
‘Iranian Youth Contemplating’ came about on a visit to the British Museum. I toured around until I found something which interested me. In the corner of the glass cabinet was a small tile fragment (Jabuchi 17th C Iran). I began drawing it – laying colour and line as the work emerged.
On a similar visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum I was immersed in drawing an exhibit when I became aware of an ‘official’ at my shoulder – oh dear I must be doing something wrong? No. In fact the charming assistant was bearing a folding stool – she thought I might be more comfortable sitting than standing!
What I like about digital work is its accessibility. I now have a large collection of images – one for any occasion. I give presents of prints to friends. I send virtual bouquets at the touch of the screen!
